Why is his name Monk anyway?

This article is about the movie Coup and analysis of its symbolism. Hope you watched it, so you don’t have to worry about the spoilers. For a general idea and my views about the movie, click here. Mustache: It is the symbol of manhood. The movie starts with Monk trimming and shaping his full mustache. In the first scene we see J.C. Horton, he seems like he has decided to grow a mustache and it is in a weird growing stage that it looks like a teen’s mustache. So, both men decided to have a mustache, one has a full mustache the other has a teen’s mustache. 

Why is his name Monk anyway?: Monk literally means “a member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.” Floyd Monk is not a man like this. When he arrives at Egg island, he rebels against poverty (with servants), chastity(with Jules) and obedience(with Jay). Jay lives a life like a monk. When he kills him, his monk-like life ends. When Jules likes him, she starts to write stories, which is a kind of creation. And servants wanted more privileges.

Egg Island: Egg is a symbol for child and it's also an island which is surrounded by water (symbol of mother). It’s mother and child being together. It’s paradise.

Firefly:Firefly that is in the hands of Jules and Jay symbolizes the fire between them. Which was only as much as a fly since they sleep in twin beds.

Chef’s Whites: Monk wears a white chef’s uniform. It symbolizes innocence. Was he innocent? Check out what I say on this here.

Monk’s right hand’s index finger: He says he lost it in the war. He probably lost his belief in God in the war. Because in the painting  “Creation of Adam” by Michelangelo, the right hand’s index finger belongs to God. 

Why is Horton so sensitive about the pool?: Jay is okay with everything that he uses in common with the servants but “it’s different” he says when it comes to the pool. Pool symbolizes the mother archetype. That's all I want to say on this symbol.

Coup: The devil wanted more. He had pride and arrogance. He refused to bow. The one who refused to bow was Jay who was God of his home, his paradise and the Egg Island. Monk wanted to be God. This is Coup against God. The one who took the real Floyd Monk’s place might also be him.

The story Jules told: This story encapsulates everything in symbols. They acted it out and the wizard was Monk. Steed is probably his dead partner and the knight riding him was Jay. Who does the princess behind the bars symbolize? Jules?

Flu: It rhymes with Floyd. It is also called influenza. Floyd influenced everyone around him like a virus, with his ideas and presence. There was war overseas but with the flu, war has come home. And with Floyd, the war has come to Egg Island.
